JUNE CHAN
ABOUT
June Chan (b. 2000, Hong Kong) is a visual artist based in London. Her work explores social and political themes, including modern sexism, blurred cultural identities, and the myth of stoic femininity. Chan's work finds tension in the space between the brightly familiar and the psychologically unsettling.
Her practice examines how the politics of numbness and the performance of feminine resilience are both internalised and subtly resisted. She depicts emotionless, cartoon-like characters that serve as self-portraits and symbols of contemporary womanhood: resisting the expectation to smile while also acknowledging the helplessness of living in a misogynistic world. What initially appears as a colourful composition gradually reveals a deeper, unsettling layer.
In her work, the recurring symbol of the horse represents an untamed emblem of freedom. a yearning for liberation and genuine happiness that coexists with numbness. Chan intertwines references to cultural ceramics, tapestry patterns, and the visual language of her heritage, transforming her signature style into a sharp feminist manifesto on autonomy and resilience.
